Discover Kimono Japanese Restaurant (Summit Location)

Walking into Kimono Japanese Restaurant (Summit Location) feels like stepping into a familiar neighborhood spot that still manages to surprise you. Tucked into 324 Summit Square Blvd, Winston-Salem, NC 27105, United States, this diner-style Japanese restaurant has become a go-to for locals who want comfort, consistency, and a little flair on the plate. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, usually after a long workday, and the experience has been reliably satisfying in a way that keeps pulling me back.

The menu leans into what most people crave when they think of Japanese cuisine in a casual setting. Sushi rolls, hibachi plates, noodle bowls, and bento-style combinations dominate the lineup. On one visit, I watched a family at the next table split a massive hibachi chicken and steak combo, steam rising as the server set it down. The portions are generous without being overwhelming, which matters when you’re dining with mixed appetites. I usually gravitate toward the sushi rolls, especially anything featuring fresh cut fish and balanced rice seasoning, two details that separate decent sushi from truly enjoyable sushi.

What stands out is how the kitchen handles consistency. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, nearly 64% of diners say consistency is more important than trendiness when choosing where to eat. This place seems to understand that instinctively. Whether it’s a Tuesday lunch or a busy Friday night, the flavors stay steady. The rice texture doesn’t change, the sauces aren’t overdone, and the proteins are cooked with care. That kind of reliability only comes from well-trained staff and repeatable processes in the kitchen.

I once chatted briefly with a server who mentioned that many of the chefs have years of experience working in Japanese-style kitchens, especially hibachi grills. That tracks with what you taste. Hibachi cooking relies on precise heat control and timing, and when done right, it locks in moisture while developing that lightly charred surface. You can see the method in action in the way the vegetables stay crisp and the meats remain tender. Food science research backs this up, showing that high-heat, short-duration cooking helps preserve texture and flavor compounds.

Reviews around town often mention the relaxed atmosphere, and that’s accurate. This isn’t a white-tablecloth destination; it’s a place where friends meet after practice, coworkers unwind, and families celebrate small wins. The dining room stays clean and organized, and the service tends to be quick without feeling rushed. During one particularly busy evening, our server checked in just enough, refilled drinks promptly, and handled special requests without missing a beat. That kind of attentiveness builds trust over time.

Another reason people keep recommending this spot is value. With rising food costs nationwide, many restaurants have quietly reduced portions or increased prices. Here, the pricing still feels fair. A full hibachi meal can easily stretch into leftovers, and sushi rolls are sized to actually fill you up. Industry reports from foodservice analytics firms show that perceived value strongly influences repeat visits, and this restaurant clearly benefits from that dynamic.

There are limitations worth mentioning. If you’re searching for ultra-traditional or experimental Japanese dishes, the menu may feel familiar rather than adventurous. The focus is on crowd-pleasers, not obscure regional specialties. For most diners, though, that’s part of the appeal. You know what you’re ordering, and you know it will be good.

Overall, the experience blends approachability with dependable quality. From the thoughtfully prepared menu items to the steady stream of positive reviews, everything points to a restaurant that understands its audience. It doesn’t try to reinvent Japanese dining; instead, it delivers comfort food done right, consistent flavors, and welcoming service in a location that’s easy to return to again and again.

  • We made a reservation at Kimono two weeks ago for a wonderful family dinner on a special day. They prepared a wonderful course meal. The sashimi and sushi were so fresh and sweet. Every course was delicious and wonderful. I regret not taking pictures because I was eating so deliciously. Thank you so much for preparing everything beautifully from the appetizers to the last dessert.

  • This was our first time eating at this location, and we will definitely be back. I didn't get photos of all our food. We are a family of four, and we ordered: edamame, combo spicy rolls, kids Hibachi steak, and three combo dinner. Everything was fresh and yummy. The price wasn't too bad. We paid $100 for everything, including the tip.
